Why Wild Magic Sorcery?

Choosing a Tiefling for your Wild Magic Sorcerer creates a thrilling and surprisingly resilient battlefield controller. As a Wild Magic Sorcerer, your spells can trigger unpredictable magical anomalies through the Wild Magic Surge feature. Some of these surges can result in accidental self-damage, such as exploding in a fireball centered on yourself. This is where the Tiefling's Fiendish Legacy shines, granting you innate resistance to fire damage, which keeps you standing when your own chaotic magic backfires.

Additionally, the Fiendish Legacy trait provides free charisma-based spells as you level up, expanding your limited Sorcerer spell selection without using your precious spell slots. This lets you focus your learned spells on battlefield control, like slowing enemies or creating obstacles. Since Charisma is your primary ability score, both your innate tiefling spells and your sorcerer spells will hit with maximum accuracy.

Finally, your Darkvision allows you to navigate and target enemies in pitch-black dungeons without giving away your position with a torch. By combining tiefling survivability with the ability to bend probability through features like Tides of Chaos, you can confidently manipulate the battlefield while surviving the beautiful chaos you unleash.

Wild Magic Sorcery Features

Wild Magic Surge

Level 3

Once per turn, after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, the DM can have you roll a d20. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a random magical effect.

Tides of Chaos

Level 3

You can gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. Once you do so, you can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest. Any time before you regain the use of this feature, the DM can have you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. You then regain the use of this feature.

Bend Luck

Level 6

When another creature you can see makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can use your reaction and spend 2 sorcery points to roll 1d4 and apply the number rolled as a bonus or penalty (your choice) to the creature's roll. You can do so after the creature rolls but before any effects occur.

Controlled Chaos

Level 14

Whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, you can roll twice and use either result.

Tamed Surge

Level 18

You gain a measure of control over the surges of your wild magic. Whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, you can roll twice and choose which result to use. If you roll the same number on both dice, you can instead choose any effect on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wild Magic Sorcery a good subclass for Tiefling Sorcerer?
Yes, it is an excellent and highly thematic choice. Tieflings possess natural fire resistance via Fiendish Legacy, which is a perfect safety net for the chaotic Wild Magic Surge feature that can occasionally trigger self-centered fire explosions. Furthermore, your high Charisma naturally fuels both your Sorcerer spells and your innate Tiefling magic, making you an incredibly effective and resilient battlefield controller.
What makes Wild Magic Sorcery different from other Sorcerer subclasses?
Unlike other subclasses that offer predictable power, Wild Magic Sorcery specializes in probability manipulation and chaos. It introduces unique risk-and-reward gameplay through Wild Magic Surges. You gain the ability to manipulate fate itself, using features like Tides of Chaos to gain advantage on rolls, and later Bend Luck to alter the rolls of allies and enemies, making you an unpredictable but powerful controller.
