Why Diviner?

As a Goliath Diviner Wizard, you are the ultimate battlefield mastermind. While wizards are traditionally fragile "glass cannons," your Goliath heritage gives you surprising durability. Traits like Giant Ancestry grant you supernatural resilience to reduce incoming damage, allowing you to shrug off hits that would normally break your concentration on powerful control spells.

Your primary role is a Controller, shaping the battlefield to guarantee your party's victory. This is driven by your signature level 3 subclass feature, Portent. This feature lets you roll two twenty-sided dice (d20s) at the start of the day and save the results. You can swap these pre-rolled numbers in for any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by anyone nearby, taking the luck out of critical moments.

By combining this fate-weaving power with your physical traits, like Powerful Build and your ability to grow in size, you can safely position yourself to dictate the flow of combat. You can force a boss to fail a crucial saving throw against your spells, or ensure an ally lands their most devastating strike, all while standing tall as a physically imposing arcane anchor.

Diviner Features

Divination Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy divination spells into your spellbook is halved.

Portent

Level 3

When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll. Each foretelling roll can be used only once. You gain a new set of rolls when you finish a long rest.

Expert Divination

Level 6

When you cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher using a spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

The Third Eye

Level 10

As an action, you can increase your powers of perception. Choose one of: Darkvision (60 ft), Ethereal Sight (see into the Ethereal Plane within 60 ft), Greater Comprehension (read any language), or See Invisibility (see invisible creatures and objects within 10 ft). The effect lasts until you use this feature again or finish a short or long rest.

Greater Portent

Level 14

You roll three d20s for your Portent feature instead of two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Diviner a good subclass for Goliath Wizard?
Yes! Goliath wizards often struggle with fragility, but the Goliath's defensive traits perfectly offset the Wizard's low health pool. Meanwhile, the Diviner's game-changing Portent feature doesn't rely on physical stats, allowing you to focus your high Intelligence (INT 15) on locking down enemies while using your giant heritage to stay safe, making you an incredibly resilient and reliable controller.
What makes Diviner different from other Wizard subclasses?
Unlike other wizard schools that focus on raw damage or summoning, the Diviner specializes in information gathering and fate manipulation. Through features like Portent and Expert Divination, you strip away the randomness of the game. You literally see the future, replacing risky dice rolls with guaranteed outcomes to ensure your party's plans succeed without relying on luck.
